#30 – The Assassination of Jesses James by the Coward Robert Ford

#30

Aside from having one of the longest film titles in recent memory, Assassination is anything but lengthy. OK, I’m lying. This movie is so very hella long. Dear lord it’s long. So so so so long. But the movie itself is visually stunning. Hence, probably why this film was in at least half of everyone’s top 10. That, and the man crushes everyone has on Brad Pitt.

Good Points – Cinematography, Casey Affleck rules, Score, Ensemble

Bad Points – almost 3 hours long, droning narrative, Naptime

I’m not going to sugar coat this, you’ll either LOVE or HATE this film. Seriously, at the end of viewing you’re going to be like “Oh my god, that was AWESOME!” or “WTF, I need my life back”. It is a western, but I can only compare viewing experience to that of The Thin Red Line or The English Patient.

Casey Affleck, in my opinion, makes this film. His performance as the “coward” Robert Ford is amazing. More so, he gives the film the juice to last that extra 30 minutes. Not only that, he seems to have the best chemistry with everyone on screen.

Sadly, I wasn’t a huge fan of the narration. Stylistically, I’m sure they wanted exactly what came off. However, for such a slow and tedious film it only added to the dullness at times. I couldn’t help but think I was listening to a book on tape layered on top of the film. Sigh.

After all the pieces were added together, I concluded that I did enjoy this movie. I’m not sure if it were something I would recommend to people, however, it did end up as #30 on my list. So check it out with caution.

  1. the one person i know who saw this, aside from you, said it was alright but had big probs with the length. said it was interesting but really really really dragged at times. said only to bother seeing it if you’re a hardcore western dude

  2. yeah, its a very ‘visual’ movie. a very LONG visual. im not sure if i would say you need to be a ‘hardcore western’ but possibly historical film loving cinephile. hah. or if your possibly interested in Robert Ford.
